Spring is here and it’s time enjoy the variety of music performed by the Hartford City Band. The band will perform this concert on Sunday, April 23rd at 2:30 pm in the Schauer Arts Center, 147 N. Rural St. in Hartford. This concert is free & no ticket is required. The band has 2 co-conductors and each will direct the band with a variety of musical selections. Under the direction of Terri Kolinski, the band will open the concert with “The Liberty Bell March” by John Philip Sousa. Other selections include “Begin the Beguine”, “A Hymn Tune Rhapsody” and “Night and Day”, just to name a few. The 2nd half of the concert, the band will perform under the direction of Isaac Dae Young. The first selection for the 2nd half of the concert is “The Lion King Medley”. Other selections include “America the Beautiful:”, “An American in Paris” and “My Fair Lady Suite”, just to name a few. The band will present 2 scholarships during this concert. One is the Fred & Joyce Aliota Scholarship which the band started in 1981 in honor of Fred Aliota who was the band director for 25 years. This scholarship is presented to a student who is pursuing a career in music. There have been over 33 recipients of this scholarship as some years 2 scholarships were awarded. The other scholarship is to dedicate the longtime members, Doug & Margaret Smith scholarship. This scholarship is a continuing education scholarship. The applicant can pursue a degree in any major. This year, each scholarship recipient will receive $2,000. The Hartford City Band has been in existence for 143 years and tradition has played an integral part of the band. We have members from Hartford & the surrounding area. There are no dues or tryouts. Some of the members have been playing in the band over 40 years. The band will be performing concerts in the park this summer, each week from mid-June through mid-August in the shelter in Woodlawn Park in Hartford. The concerts start at 8:00 pm & generally last around 1 hour.
